General Dentistry

It’s easy to overlook routine dental visits—especially when you’re brushing and flossing regularly. But professional care plays a vital role in maintaining your long-term oral health.

At Waratah Dental, our general dentistry services help prevent problems before they start and treat issues early to avoid more complex procedures later.

Our general dental services include:

Comprehensive Dental Examinations

A comprehensive dental exam is a detailed assessment of your oral health, including your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. It may include dental x-rays, an oral cancer screening, and a review of your medical and dental history to ensure a complete understanding of your overall health and treatment needs.

Preventive Care

A preventative dental care involves a professional clean performed by our oral health therapist to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. It involves the removal of plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface stains that can’t be removed by regular brushing and flossing at home.

This type of clean is designed to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems. It often includes a scale and polish, fluoride application, and personalised advice on how to care for your teeth between visits.

Regular preventive cleans—typically recommended every 6 months—are key to keeping your smile healthy for life.

Composite Restorations / Tooth-Coloured fillings

A composite restoration is a tooth-coloured white filling used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, fractures, or wear. Made from a durable resin material, composite restorations blend seamlessly with your natural tooth colour, making them an ideal choice for both front and back teeth.

What’s Involved in the Procedure?

  1. Assessment & Preparation – The tooth is examined, and any decay or damaged tooth structure is gently removed.
  2. Tooth Isolation – The area is kept dry to help the composite bond properly.
  3. Layering the Composite – The composite material is applied in layers, with each layer cured (hardened) using a special light.
  4. Shaping & Polishing – Once the final layer is set, the restoration is shaped to match your bite and polished for a smooth, natural finish.

Composite restorations are a strong, minimally invasive solution that help restore the function and appearance of your tooth—while preserving as much natural structure as possible.

Extractions

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions may be needed when a tooth is severely decayed, broken beyond repair, infected, or causing crowding—such as with wisdom teeth.

Your dentist will begin by numbing the area with local anaesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable. The tooth is then gently loosened and removed. In some cases, a surgical extraction may be needed if the tooth is impacted or difficult to access.

After the procedure, your dentist will provide aftercare instructions to help manage healing and minimise discomfort. In many cases, options for replacing the tooth—like implants or bridges—may be discussed as part of your treatment plan.

Snoring Devices & Grinding Guards

At Waratah Dental, we offer custom-made oral appliances designed to help you breathe better, sleep soundly, and protect your teeth while you sleep.

Snoring Devices
If snoring is affecting your sleep—or your partner’s—our custom-fit mandibular advancement devices (MADs) may help. These small, comfortable devices gently position your lower jaw forward, helping to open the airway and reduce snoring. For some people, they may also assist in managing mild obstructive sleep apnoea. Unlike bulky store-bought options, our snoring appliances are individually made to fit your mouth, ensuring better comfort and effectiveness.

Night Guards for Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
If you wake with jaw pain, headaches, or worn teeth, you may be grinding or clenching your teeth during sleep—a condition known as bruxism. Left untreated, this can lead to tooth damage, jaw joint issues (TMJ), and chronic discomfort.
Our custom-fitted grinding guards act as a protective barrier between your teeth, cushioning the bite and reducing strain on your jaw muscles.

Whether you’re struggling with snoring or teeth grinding, our tailored solutions are designed to help you rest easier and protect your long-term oral health.

Oral Health Education and Awareness

Oral health education involves teaching patients the knowledge and skills they need to maintain a healthy mouth, teeth, and gums. It focuses on preventive care and empowering individuals to make informed choices about their oral hygiene habits, diet, and lifestyle.

At Waratah Dental, oral health education may include:

  • Demonstrating correct brushing and flossing techniques
  • Advice on diet and reducing sugar intake
  • Information about fluoride and dental products
  • Guidance on caring for teeth at different life stages (e.g. children, teens, adults, seniors

By improving awareness and daily habits, oral health education helps prevent dental problems like cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss—supporting long-term oral and overall health.
