Dental Care for Children
It’s essential for your kids to look after their teeth. Having healthy teeth helps to improve the self-confidence of your child and can prevent dental problems like cavities.
At Waratah Dental your child’s overall wellbeing motivates our approach to children’s dentistry. Prompted by this commitment, we strive to create a relaxing and friendly ambience in our practice to accommodate for our youngest patients.
Here are some tips:
Eat and drink healthily - sugary foods and drinks are more likely to cause tooth decay, so try to keep these to a minimum. Eating fruits and vegetables is important for dental health (as well as overall health).
Drink tap water - The best drink for kids teeth is plain tap water, as the fluoride in it strengthens their teeth.
Brush twice a day - kids should get in the habit of cleaning their teeth at least twice daily for two minutes.
Brush regularly - Regular brushing will help to reduce plaque build-up and tooth decay and ensure the health of teeth and gums. Kids under eight years may need assistance with the correct brushing technique.
Floss daily - flossing once a day will help reduce the build-up of food and plaque between teeth. Kids may need some assistance with flossing to ensure that they are flossing correctly and to get them into a regular flossing routine.
Visit your dentist - a visit to the dentist every 6 months is recommended for kids aged three years and over, or earlier if there are any concerns. This will allow the dentist to do a thorough check of your child’s teeth and it also reinforces good dental care and oral health habits.
Wear a mouth guard for sport - playing sport is a great way to keep kids active and happy. Protect your child’s teeth whilst they’re playing with a custom-made, professionally fitted mouth guard. They’re available in a range of colours and should be worn during training and playing sport to reduce the risk of dental injury.

Veneers
Veneers are thin tooth coloured porcelain or composite resin facings that are applied to the front of the teeth. They are a more conservative treatment option than crowns and can assist in creating a beautiful smile. Veneers can help rectify a number of dental problems such as broken or chipped teeth, gaps or slightly misaligned, stained or discoloured teeth. Veneers can be a more cost effective treatment option and are often a preferred treatment option where the underlying tooth structure is strong. Good oral hygiene and care for veneers will ensure that they last longer.
Root Canal Therapy
If the pulp inside one of your teeth becomes diseased or injured, endodontic treatment is the last resort to save the tooth from extraction.
The most common procedure in endodontics is Root Canal Therapy. Whilst RCT can be completed in a single appointment, it is beneficial to the success of your treatment to complete it over two or three appointments.
Root Canal Therapy is typically performed following the development of an abscess on the root of your tooth. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. Then the pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped. The infected area is medicated and once the tooth is disease free the root canals are filled. The crown opening is filled with a temporary material.
Once it has been determined that the Root Canal Therapy has been successful, a permanent porcelain crown will be placed to seal the tooth and allow you to function normally.
Veneers & Crowns
Crowns
Crowns are often used where a tooth is weakened by tooth decay, previous root canal treatment or natural wear and tear. They can also be used to improve the appearance of your smile by covering chipped, cracked or discoloured teeth. A crown is custom made to fit over the natural tooth or restoration adding strength, stability and durability to the existing tooth.

Dental Implants
Dental implant surgery is a routine and highly successful dental procedure. Dental implants are like an artificial root that is secured into the jaw. The implant is made of medical grade titanium and is placed in the site of a missing tooth (or teeth). After insertion, the implant bonds with the jaw bone and is then capped with a ceramic crown that matches surrounding teeth. This will ensure that the implant looks natural and only you and your dentist will know that the tooth isn’t real.
Dental implants are widely used to:
- Replace a tooth (or teeth) to give the appearance and function of a natural tooth
- Secure a full or partial implant supported ceramic fixed bridge
- Hold removable dentures to prevent movement and improve the speech and chewing action of the wearer restoring your smile
Dentures & Retained Dentures
Dentures are one alternative to replacing missing or lost teeth. Dentures assist people to feel more confident when smiling and enhance the ability to function and eat a wide range of foods.your teeth.
There are three types of dentures:
A full denture replaces all the natural teeth. These dentures rest on the gums of either your upper or lower jaws, or both. A full set of dentures helps provide support to your facial structure allowing your lips and cheeks to look fuller, resulting in a younger, healthier appearance.
A partial denture replaces some lost or missing teeth and are usually retained by clasps around your existing teeth. Replacing missing teeth will make eating easier and provide you with a more confident smile. These dentures can have a plastic or chrome base for added strength.
Implant retained dentures are a popular alternative to conventional dentures. An implant retained denture replaces one or more single teeth and is held in place by dental implants secured within the jaw. Implant retained dentures provide a better ability to eat and enjoy foods like steak, raw fruits and vegetables. They also give you increased confidence as the dentures are stable and secure.
